OCJS is currently conducting its strategic planning process. It will produce a statewide criminal justice strategic plan that includes the role of grant programs, especially the JAG program, in meeting priority needs.
The first step is a needs and priorities assessment that identifies and prioritizes Ohio's criminal justice needs, such as gaps in services. The assessment is complemented by analysis of crime and funding data.
The second step is a statewide criminal justice strategic planning conference. Evidence-based programs and practices relevant to the identified priority needs will be presented at conference workshops. The conference culminates in focus groups that discuss how best to address Ohio's priority needs and how to include evidence-based programs/practices in that response.
The final step is OCJS writing the actual strategic plan that syntheses input from the conference focus groups.
Completed
Purpose: OCJS staff interviewed key criminal justice stakeholders in Ohio. Key stakeholders are both state and local level officials, including Supreme Court justices, the Ohio Attorney General, members of the General Assembly, and directors of the relevant state departments. Local officials are primarily people active in major statewide associations such as the Ohio Justice Association for Community Corrections, the Ohio Association of County Commissioners, and the Buckeye State Sheriffs' Association. The stakeholders are helping OCJS to identify Ohio's justice system needs and how these needs should be prioritized. Their responses are the basis for the statewide survey and identifying topics or speakers for the conference workshops.
To be completed: September 16, 2011
Purpose: OCJS is conducting a survey of justice professionals to identify priority needs statewide. The survey will consist of general questions to be answered by all, as well as specific questions tailored to the fields of law enforcement, court/prosecution/defense, community and institutional corrections, juvenile justice, victims, and public policy.
To be completed: September 30, 2011
Purpose: Data is being collected from a multitude of secondary sources across the justice system, covering the areas of crime and victims, law enforcement, courts, arrests, corrections, and juvenile justice. This data provides context for Ohio's justice system needs and priorities.
To be completed: November 3-4, 2011
Purpose: The conference is the culmination of the needs and priorities assessment and data collection efforts. It brings together 200 local, state, and federal invited guests, most of whom participated in either the core group interviews or the survey. The purpose of the conference is to identify how Ohio can best address the priority needs while incorporating evidence-based practices.
To be completed: December 31, 2011
Purpose: We will integrate all we have from the needs and priorities assessment, crime and funding data, and the conference into a statewide criminal justice plan.
