JJIS Mission Statement:
To create a secure electronic environment to share information among
juvenile courts and the Ohio Department of Youth Services

The Juvenile Justice Information System (JJIS) is an Internet-based system designed to improve the efficiency and productivity of juvenile courts.  To accomplish this, JJIS offers the following functions:

  • Communication between courts by facilitating basic youth history searches while allowing participating agencies to control the information they share and who is authorized to access it.

  • Streamlined process of receiving Department of Youth Services information, by providing real-time custom individual and county aggregate youth reports.

  • Mechanism to retrieve information from state agencies, including the ability to run Bureau of Motor Vehicles driving history searches on youth.

As a priority of Ohio’s Criminal Justice Information System Plan, the original JJIS concept has been redesigned to maximize the use of already existing data sources and records management systems, to expedite the implementation phase.

The JJIS design:

  • Minimizes expenditures for new equipment by drawing from existing information technology systems
  • Requires no additional data entry to participate
  • Implements Internet browser presentation styles so users require minimal training
  • Retains contributor control over access to data
  • Accommodates the use of future technologies critical to juvenile justice agencies.
