Family Violence Prevention Center

FVPC logoThe Ohio Family Violence Prevention Center was established at OCJS by Executive Order in 1999.  Prior to the Center, no similar body existed in Ohio.  The Center serves as an information clearinghouse for public and private organizations as they provide assistance to victims.  The Center also offers a variety of services such as providing victim advocacy/assistance, organizing workshops, giving presentations and conducting research on family violence and its impact on communities.

The Center is currently an active member of following organizations that address domestic violence and family violence intervention and prevention issues in Ohio:

  • Domestic Violence and Immigrant Statewide Task Force
  • Interagency Victims Assistance Coordinating Committee

  • Ohio Victim Witness Association
  • Ohio Sexual Violence and Intimate Partner Violence Consortium
  • Ohio Sexual Assault Task Force
  • Supreme Court of Ohio Domestic Violence Advisory Committee

The Executive Order also instituted the Ohio Family Violence Prevention Advisory Council as a part of the Center. The Council is where Ohio’s top experts in domestic and family violence prevention come together to consider and recommend improvements in the State. The mission of the Council is to provide guidance, encourage coordination and promote action by government, the private sector and citizens to understand, prevent and respond to domestic and family violence. The vision is to produce a cultural shift of society’s perspective of and response to domestic violence so that domestic and family violence is not tolerated.

Membership on the Council is composed of a maximum of 40 members that are multi-disciplinary in representation. Members may include federal and state governments, local initiatives, non-governmental agencies as well different demographic and geographic representatives. Currently the Council has five committees to address various topics that are of interest and concern to the Council. These committees are: Communications, Education & Training, Fatality Review, Research, and Statutes & Rules.
